Local historian Ray Jones's book on Worcester compares
present-day photographs of the city with images from the past.
Most of the old photographs date from the early 1900s to the1950s, although some more modern images have been included. The recent history of
Worcester, like so many other towns and cities, has been one of constant and rapid
change producing an urban landscape that many abhor but others deem necessary.
Worcester sprawls out relentlessly towards the motorway, engulfing ancient hamlets such as Trotshill and covering fertile farmland in concrete. The city centre has been developed in order to prevent access by car, producing a street mosaic obscured by the ill-thought-out placement of trees.
Fortunately, however, many of Worcester's historic buildings have escaped the bulldozer, making it one of the most attractive cities in the land.
