The first view of the Commandery is a deceptive one for behind the small timber-framed entrance is a stunning complex of buildings, Medieval to Georgian in period, holding interests rich and varied for the visitor. At the Battle of Worcester in 1651 the Commandery was used as the Royalist Headquarters. Today, period rooms offer a glimpse at the stunning architecture and style of Tudor and Stuart times whilst acting as home to the country's only museum devoted to the story of England's Civil War. As this dramatic story unfolds take your place at the trial of Charles I, visit a Royalist encampment on the eve of the battle and enjoy the video re-enactment of the last battle of the war narrated by Charles II and Oliver Cromwell. In addition our newly refurbished Gallery houses a different exhibition every few months. As well as permanent displays the Commandery has a wealth of events throughout the year for you to enjoy. With a history spanning the centuries, time travelling events allow characters from the Commandery's past to come back to visit. We will bring the past to life either with our own costumed staff or with the help of re-enactment societies such as Worcester Militia. Regular features of our events programme include candlelit ghost tours, Summer garden parties, music and theatre evenings and children's holiday activities. Alternatively you can rent the magnificent Great Hall itself for an event of your own. (Contact the Commandery for further details.) Our shop stocks a large selection of books, period gift items and souvenirs. Our tea-room, Cromwells' Pantry, will be delighted to serve you with light lunches and afternoon tea from April to the end of October. Our extensive schools programme is designed to meet the demands of the National Curriculum at Key Stages 2 and 3. (Contact the Commandery for further details.) Finding us is simple with excellent road links from the M5 at Junction 7. The Commandery is right in the heart of Worcester just 3 minutes walk from the Cathedral.
